Hard or Soft toothbrushes?

April 1, 2014 / drs.eidelson / Gums

Should I use a hard bristle toothbrush or soft bristle one?

I have many patients asking me this question. A lot of patients brush their teeth with a bit too much vigor, resulting in tooth sensitivity. If you have not experienced an electric toothbrush like a Sonicare or Oral B, you should invest in one. These electronic toothbrushes run in a cycle that effectively cleans all the surfaces of your teeth and the time spent brushing is usually longer that the average person spends brushing his/her teeth with a normal toothbrush. soft bristle toothbrush for regular use.

HARD BRISTLE TOOTHBRUSHES ARE  HARMFUL TO:

  • Your gums
  • the dentin of your teeth – which is the soft tooth matter beneath your enamel

Why does this matter and what are the long term affects of using a hard bristle brush?

Aggressive tooth brushing can result in gum recession which ultimately leads to tooth sensitivity. It also leads to dentin abrasion.

There are many varieties of toothbrushes sold in the stores and most of them are medium bristle brushes. Find a soft brush and prevent problems in the future.
